雄は2.4m〜2.8m雌で2.5mの大きさ
体重も200kgくらいある
ライオンの中でもかなり大きい。
古代ローマ帝国の時代にコロセッオで剣闘士が戦ったライオンがこれ。
その他にも死刑執行に使われたりした。
1922年に最後の一頭が射殺され絶滅したとされていたが、
1996年にバーバリーライオンっぽいライオンが
